If I ask you about your daughter’s dresses, would you answer me that you buy them having in mind her comfort and that they would let her move freely?
Kids spend lots of time in school, and in preschool, most of the activities they do along the day are sensorial and to exercise their body. Feeling comfortable with the clothes they wear it’s important because they nonstop moving. And if we make easier that kids have a good motor skill development they’ll feel skillful and capable, with what their self-esteem will increase.
This week we continue with the advice on how to dress your kids with clothes that favor their autonomy and their wellbeing during the school day.
S H I R T S
Shirts are a garment that stimulates debate because there are some people that are in favor and other that are detractors. In case you want that your kids wear shirts to go to school you should keep in mind that shirts should be wide enough to allow the kids to move with comfort. Or in case shirts were tight, the fabric that they are made with should have elastane or a similar fiber that offers elasticity to it.
Another subject to evaluation is the number of buttons and their size. If the buttons are too small, kids won’t be able to deal with them properly because their fine motor skills aren’t developed enough. Another option is buying shirts with Velcro or snaps, although in this second case you should be careful with the snaps’ size too.
What you really should care about is having in mind what day of the week your kids will wear shirts, to prevent the coincidence with their physical education or swimming lessons. These both lessons require that kids change clothes and shirts are a garment that needs time for being dressed and undressed.

Children’s clothing brands have taken care of transforming this garment into a new modern piece of clothing. And this fact lets us find beautiful, comfortable and practical dresses.
In order to buy a dress with these qualities, the dress should be buttoned at front. In this way the girl will be able to put it on and take it off by herself. Besides, it’s advisable that the dress would be made of knitted fabric or flat fabric that has elastane fibers that offer elasticity to it.
An important element is the skirt length, which it should be over the girl’s knees. With a short skirt the girl will be able to move without suffering for step on it, for her classmates treading on the skirt or just for not being able to do some movements, like crawling. If you’re interested in knowing more about this subject. I suggest you to read the post “The length does matter. The dress one, of course”
One last suggestion is that it’s better that the girl wears leggings under the skirt instead of tights or leotards. Leggings are more durable, resist better to the kids’ play intensity and they are also easier and comfortable for kids to put them on and take them off.
O V E R A L L S
As our main goal is that kids are the most autonomous they can be and that they don’t need adults help to dress and undress themselves, the use of overalls it’s not appropriate in kids aged from three to six; even less for going to school. When kids need to go to the toilet they have to undress themselves completely and to dress themselves back and this, in addition to being uncomfortable, makes that they need the help of their teachers.
After having read this post, have you considered if you had in mind how the clothes intervene in your kids’ everyday life, in yours and in their teachers?
